Cross Media Advertising.

Shutter Island.
Poster:
- Red and black are the main colours used in this poster as the red creates a sense of evil and danger and black creates a sense of mystery and shows the tone of the movie to be serious which ties in with the thriller genre.
-Leonardo DiCaprio’s star status is used as a unique selling point as he will have a pre-determined audience.
-The messages in this poster are mostly visual, such as the fire and the island, but there is also a tagline, the main actors name and the title.
-I would say that the intended audience for this poster is mostly male, also fans of Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio. Good looking guy could attract females.
-This poster looks like it could of been expensive to make as it looks like it has had a lot off digital work done on it, even though the image of the face could be a still from the movie the island and waves look as if they have been editing and made on a computer.
-The use of red writing and black background add to the feel of a thriller, as does the tagline “Someone is missing” these all add to the conventions which make this poster recognisable as a thriller.
- The tagline is used to create a sense of mystery about the movie.
-The use of a bright flame on a dark background gains attention due to the big contrast.
- I think this poster is very well put together and matches will the overall feel of the advertising campaign henceforth communicating to the audience effectively by showing them the genre and grabbing their attention.

The trailer immediately starts with a fast cutting rate with shots of the island with narration over talking about murder and violence which immediately grabs the audience’s attention. Then Martin Scorsese’s name flashes up on the screen, showing the name of this famous director will draw in a pre-determined audience for him. It then cuts to someone trying to grab a gun, which continues this theme of violence and murder. Then the cuts slow down and there is a mid-shot of a crazy looking old lady putting her finger to her lips as a sign to be quiet, this shows the physiological side of the movie and also the secrecy and mystery behind it. ‘Whatever is going on here is bad’ is heard over the images, which reiterates the theme of secrecy.  Then there is a shot of the gates closing which gives a sign of confinement and being trapped.  Then a low angled long shot of a body floating in the water, which adds to the sense of danger.  Dark establishing shots of the island give the audience a more in depth view of the movie. Then there is a medium shot of DiCaprio walking down a dark dingy hallway which immediately leads to a fast cut of someone trying to grab him, the suddenness of this is startling and adds to the feeling of a thriller movie. The shots of a dead girl and of a dead man show a sense of danger and violence in the movie, also the shot of DiCaprio holding a gun reiterates this. The shot of behind of a chair with the narration “show me your face” adds a sense of suspense and mystery, as does the sound of a woman screaming. Then it cuts to a close-up of DiCaprio looking angry in a dark background, which adds a sense of seriousness. Then the cutting rate increase with shots of fire, crashing waves and ash everywhere which makes the film looks dangerous and to have action within it. The sound of someone whispering “oh my god” is nerving and makes the movie sound shocking. It ends with the title of the movie “Shutter Island” which leaves the title fresh in the audiences mind.

Magazine Cover + Movie Poster Similarities:

- The red colouring of the lettering across both the movie poster and the front cover has connotations of danger and evil which shows this to be of the thriller genre.
- Leonardo’s star persona is used across both as a unique selling point as he will have a pre-determined audience.
- The dark background of both reflects the tone of the movie and also reflects the genre.
- The use in smoke in both of them adds to the sense of mystery in the film and also reiterates the genre of the movie.

SLR Cameras

A single-lens reflex (SLR) camera is a camera that typically uses a semi-automatic moving mirror system that permits the photographer to see exactly what will be captured by the film or digital imaging system (after a very small delay), as opposed to pre-SLR cameras where the view through the viewfinder could be significantly different from what was captured on film. (The Canon Pellix film camera was an exception wherein the mirror was a fixed beamsplitting pellicle.)

-Blogs
A blog (a blend of the term web log) is a type of website or part of a website. Blogs are usually maintained by an individual with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video. Entries are commonly displayed in reverse-chronological order. Blog can also be used as a verb, meaning to maintain or add content to a blog.

Most blogs are interactive, allowing visitors to leave comments and even message each other via widgets on the blogs and it is this interactivity that distinguishes them from other static websites.

Many blogs provide commentary or news on a particular subject; others function as more personal online diaries. A typical blog combines text, images, and links to other blogs, Web pages, and other media related to its topic. The ability of readers to leave comments in an interactive format is an important part of many blogs. Most blogs are primarily textual, although some focus on art (Art blog), photographs (photo blog), videos (video blogging), music (MP3 blog), and audio (podcasting). Micro blogging is another type of blogging, featuring very short posts.
